The spring semester of 2022, I took a class called Design Synthesis. In this class we worked on a semester long project were we created a design system for a UNESCO World Heritage Site of our choosing.
I choose to design for the UNESCO site, Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia. I picked this World Heritage Site because of how important Colombia is to me, I was adopted from Colombia as a baby and I took this project as an opportunity for me to research my heritage and culture. Along with that, my dad’s side of the family has business ties to Colombia and we have a whole bunch of family there and an agriculture business, called Manuelita.
Our family business, Manuelita, mainly produces sugar, so I knew some information on agriculture in Colombia, but not about coffee, so I had to do my own research.
This project was 50/50 research and design. It was important that we knew just as much about the community we were representing as the design layout we were aiming for.
I took inspiration from the traditional colors found in Colombia, the organic curves of coffee beans and the vast mountainous landscape used for agriculture in Colombia.
Below is a summary of the design system I designed for the, Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia, which I printed as a large scale poster for our final in-class critique. Everything on the summary I also printed to scale so that my classmates could interact with the real life versions of my designs.
My professor taught this class as if it was a real life project resembled
